Maria Rosce

The idea for the Alieni series was born in February 2019, an endless series in the basement of the Brera Art Gallery.

Here Maria, a student at the Academy, discovers a deposit of old postcards, which for over seventy years have been lying sedimented (or semi-forgotten) under layers of impalpable beauty.

The origin of the main character draws its inspiration from an image of "The Virgin" iconography of the famous Bernardino Luini , which depicts the portrait, one and only one which is the beautiful - masterpiece of the artist, The Virgin Mary.

The theme of the sacredness of the Virgin, is a starting point for reflection and then becomes almost automatically the basis for the search for a distinctive feature characterizing the entire work, which includes a multitude of subjects permeated with mysticism.

The exaltation of the figure of Mary shines through unharmed in all its power and symbolic delicacy, and is the characterizing element of the "first series" showing itself and then extending spontaneously to give life to a whole plurality of characters whose representation and graphic interpretation - strongly characterized by the cultural impulses of belonging of the author - is pushed towards and in favor of gender neutrality.

Aliens then, catapulted into the modern world, where the contrast between signifier and meaning remains strong.
