Close your eyes and imagine that little greenhouses are being created in the neighbourhoods in your city where you can grow medicinal herbs and sprouts. This is the desire behind the project designed by the architect Michele Perlini: modular micro greenhouses to fit in the city. This is a valuable opportunity to rediscover both the healing power of the herbs themselves and the sense of well-being that taking care of them gives to us.
At the basis of the philosophy behind architect Perlini's design is biophilic architecture which seeks to place man and nature in close contact. Coined by the German psychologist and philosopher Erich Fromm, the term biophilia, which literally means "love of life", actually refers to the attraction we have for everything that is alive and vital.
Backed by the scientific theories of the biologist Edward Osborne Wilson, biophilic design, which places the habitat at the centre of the man/nature relationship, focuses attention on natural elements such as light, materials and, of course, water and plants.
Inherent in his work, the good practices dictated by a design that places man's psycho-physical well-being at the centre, led Michele Perlini to propose for this edition of the Salone del Mobile, MY GARDEN - the neighbourhood micro greenhouse.
Simple, clean and linear, My Garden, made entirely of natural larch, using an integrated automated system made of recycled plexiglass, becomes a small medical greenhouse where you can experiment with the cultivation of medicinal herbs.
The innate appeal that nature has on the human psyche with its therapeutic and healing effects, well known in the design of healing gardens, is the stimulus that has driven the architect Perlini to design a simple and easily transportable system. It can be located throughout the neighbourhoods of densely populated cities, allowing everyone to enjoy the benefits of small collective green spaces.
My Garden - the neighbourhood micro greenhouse with medicinal herbs, created in collaboration with Verde Profilo, will be exhibited from 15 to 21 April, at the Fuorisalone, in Piazza Cordusio - Milan.
