Instituto Cervantes Milan takes part in the 63rd edition of the International Furniture Fair with a collective exhibition that brings together in Italy for the first time twelve prominent female designers from the contemporary Spanish scene. A creative journey that invites us to contemplate the alliance between tradition and the future, between sustainability and imagination.
Milan, 4th March 2025. Welcome to our exhibition, which opens its doors on April 8th at the new cultural space of the Instituto Cervantes Milan, and brings together projects of extraordinary quality and interest that celebrate Spanish design. With free admission, it is aimed at both the more experienced audience and those who wish to approach the world of design.
The exhibition brings together works by twelve important female designers from the contemporary scene, representing a great diversity of generations and areas, and approaches within the contemporary Spanish creative landscape. Amalia Puga, CristinaOmarremetería, EliGutiérrez, HelenaRohner, InésSistiaga, IngridPicanyol, Julia Esqué, MartaAyala, MirianMiguel, RaquelBuj, SilviaFerpal, and VerónicaFuerte present over 50 works including lamps, fans, garments, fabrics, plates, jugs, and pieces of jewelry, along with sketches, photographs, and videos that document the creative processes of these designers.
In a constantly changing world, the need arises to find new solutions where creative practice plays an essential role in building a more inclusive and sustainable reality. This is how this exhibition was born, as a response to human needs to (re)design the world we live in, to build a new reality, understanding design as a tool that can contribute to human well-being and development, explains curatorGloria Ruiz.
The selected designers, despite their diversity, share the common trait of embracing new technologies without renouncing the craftsmanship vision that emerges from the careful selection of materials, the attention to the development of every phase of the creative and production process, and their more committed stance.
Never before has design played such a crucial role in helping us design, experiment with, and implement possible futures. It is not just about generating solutions, but about rethinking the very foundations of our system, adopting a vision that recognizes the essential interdependencies between humans, other species, and the environment. Design can not only shape the objects around us but even the societies we want to build, comments Ana Vázquez-Barrado, director of Instituto Cervantes Milan.
Instituto Cervantes, besides his traditional offer of Spanish language courses, is a meeting place for researchers, writers, filmmakers, Hispanists, exhibitions, and more. Its offer includes numerous activities related to the culture of Spanish-speaking countries, embracing all aspects: theater, dance, music, cinema, literature, art, architecture, history, gastronomy, children's activities, and much more. In Milan, it welcomes the public at its headquarters on Via Achille Mauri (corner of Via Zebedia) and now at its new cultural space on Via Zebedia 2, where people can visit the exhibition Designer. (Re)designing the World until May 7th.
