Giovanni Hänninen Fotografia

Giovanni Hänninen was born in Helsinki in 1976. He lives and works in Milan, where he earned a PhD in Aerospace Engineering and teaches Photography for Architecture at the School of Architecture and Society of the Politecnico di Milano.

Since 2009 he has been photographer for the Filarmonica della Scala orchestra.In 2012 he was presented by Gabriele Basilico in the  exhibition 20X20 with the project cittàinattesa.

In 2015 he participated in the Triennale Off with MI-BG 49km.The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation invited him to photograph its own artist’s residence in Senegal and his pictures have been shown at the exhibition Thread (2017) at David Zwirner, New York.

In 2018 he was called by Bijoy Jan to document the projects carried out by Studio Mumbai in India. In the same year he presented the project People of Tamba in Dak’Art 2018 – Dakar Biennial of Art and to Paris for Nuit Blanche. In 2019, People of Tamba along with the documentary project Senegal/Sicily – of which he his co-author with Alberto Amoretti – was presented in Florence at Fondazione Studio Marangoni, in Marrakech as a special project of MACAAL (Musée d’Art Contemporain Africain Al Maaden) for the 1- 54 Contemporary Art Fair, in Milan at Fondazione Sozzani, in Paris during the AKAA Fair (Also Known As Africa) and finally in Palermo during the BAM (Biennale Arcipelago Mediterraneo).

In 2019 he develops two important museum projects: a photographic campaign for Complesso Museale della Pilotta for the year 2020 in which Parma is the capital of culture; the photographic project of the exhibition curated by Pierluigi Pizzi Nei Palchi della Scala – Storie milanesi for the Museo Teatrale alla Scala.

In 2020 the project The Missing Piece, developed during the first lockdown in Milan, wins the Honorable Mention at Premio Ponchielli and is selected as part of PhotoBrussels Festival 05 at Hangar Photo Center. In 2021 he participates in the XVII Biennale Architettura 2021 di Venezia with the project After/Dopo, developed with Arte Sella following the tragedy of the Vaia storm.

His works are part of many collections, both private and institutional, among which are The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, the Musée d’Art Contemporain Africain Al Maaden (MACAAL) of Marrakech and the Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea (MUFOCO) in Italy.
