About project: For Salone del Mobile 2026, Byredo unveils a collaborative project with designer Jean-Guillaume Mathiaut, an encounter between scent and structure, memory and material.
The collaboration, shaped through a close dialogue between brand and designer, unfolds as a limited edition of wooden sculptural seats conceived solely for Byredo. Developed as exhibition pieces, these works are crafted entirely in wood and finished in black, painted with Japanese ink. Conceived as quiet moments for exchange and contemplation. The edition comprises six pieces in total: two principal works, Behind the Scenes and Millenium, accompanied by four additional works corresponding to the four cardinal points of the Convent.

BYREDO presents “In Conversation With”
An artistic dialogue in collaboration with Jean-Guillaume Mathiaut for Salone del Mobile 2026.
For Salone del Mobile 2026, Byredo unveils a collaborative project with designer Jean-Guillaume Mathiaut, an
encounter between scent and structure, memory and material.
The collaboration, shaped through a close dialogue between brand and designer, unfolds as a limited edition of
wooden sculptural seats conceived solely for Byredo. Developed as exhibition pieces, these works are crafted
entirely in wood and finished in black, painted with Japanese ink. Conceived as quiet moments for exchange and
contemplation. The edition comprises six pieces in total: two principal works, Behind the Scenes and Millenium,
accompanied by four additional works corresponding to the four cardinal points of the Convent.
A parallel unfolds between past and present, where two art pieces take center stage: Behind the Scenes serves as
a nod to the foundations, the process, and the unseen gestures that have shaped the house over two decades,
while Millenium invites the visitor to look toward tomorrow, a future yet to be defined. The monochrome treatment
emphasizes silhouette, proportion, and shadow, allowing form and texture to take precedence while heightening
the sensory experience. Crafted with precision and reverence for the material’s inherent character, the pieces
examine wood as both structure and sensation. The warmth of touch, the subtle release of natural aroma, the
patina formed through use, wood, like fragrance, evolves. It absorbs, it transforms, it remembers.
Known for his rigorous yet sensitive approach to form, Mathiaut’s work emerges from an intimate and almost
spiritual relationship with wood. Trained as an architect and now recognised for sculptural furniture that blurs the
line between object and landscape, he develops pieces that feel shaped by time rather than deliberately
designed. Working from his atelier near the forest of Fontainebleau, often sourcing fallen oak and other woods
locally, Mathiaut carves directly into the material, guided by its grain, density and natural movement. His practice
is rooted in authenticity, reduction, and a deep respect for the inherent life of wood.
At Byredo, scent is an invisible architecture, building spaces through memory and emotion. In Mathiaut’s hands,
wood becomes a parallel language, carrying nuance, depth, and quiet intensity. Their shared devotion to material
honesty and sensory depth creates a natural synergy between tangible form and intangible composition.
The partnership will be unveiled at Chiostro del Cappuccio during Salone del Mobile 2026, within an exclusive
immersive scenography conceived as a contemplative environment. The installation invites visitors to inhabit the
space physically and sensorially, where seating becomes ritual and fragrance becomes atmosphere.
