On occasion of Milano Design Week, Maison Matisse invited the british designer Faye Toogood to interpret a Chinese black ink on white paper from the book "Dessins: Thèmes et Variations" (1943) by Henri Matisse.
Matisse gave shape to modern art with a joyful optimism, a will to experiment, and a quest to balance color and form. With Maison Matisse his universe continues to inspire and to find new expression in objects of design, collaborating with up-and-coming and renowned talents to interpret Matisse’s explorations.
The result of the collaboration with Faye Toogood is a collection of furniture for the living room or bedroom that reveals a least well-known universe of the master, and which Maison Matisse wants to bring out, far removed from the colourful work we are used to seeing.
The Esquisses collection marks a new step for Maison Matisse with its first objects in a monochrome palette of black, white, and natural beiges. The pared-down colours of a drawing, they foreground the essentials of patterns, and highlight the fluidity and liberty of intuitive gestures that Henri Matisse transmitted even with simple ink on paper.
