ANTIQUE AND CONTEMPORARY RUGS FROM 1878

Early 20th-century decorativism and African tribal art come alive in Barbara Frua's new collection Par terre III, on display at Alberto Levi Gallery, 24 San Maurilio Street in the heart of the Cinque Vie, from Thursday, March 9, 2023.

After debuting in 2012 followed by a second exhibition in 2015, 2019 saw the birth of the first Par terre collection, consisting of jute and cotton mats handwoven in India using the dhurrie technique. This is characterized by modular geometric designs and a palette that distinguishes Barbara Frua's predilection for warm tones and certain color combinations that best represent her. In 2021 with Par terre II, a second type of weaving (sumak) is introduced that gives the mat a more robust texture, much like that of a knotted rug. A group of seven new geometric designs will be offered in Par terre III, and in addition the palette will be expanded to as many as 20 colors in both weave qualities. Another big news is that, unlike the previous two collections where the rugs featured a direct contrast between only two shades, up to five colors will be introduced in some of the new designs. Of course, all designs in all Par terre collections can be made in any format, using any of the twenty colors available. Par terre III rugs will be presented together with the SUIMURI collection, created by Barbara Frua in collaboration with Pictalab, where we will find some of the Par terre designs made into hand-drawn and hand-painted wallpapers.

Alberto Levi Gallery opened in 1997, following a family tradition that began in the 1800s. At first focusing on antique textile art, the gallery soon followed the great innovations in contemporary carpets, becoming one of the main points of reference for the best international carpet designers. Since 2001, Alberto Levi Gallery has developed a large stable of artists and incorporated a wide range of collections.
