The “Dark Ages” collection blends lapis specularis, a transparent gypsum used by the ancient Romans instead of glass, in resin, ceramic, iron and enamel thanks to the Italian craftsmanship know-how.
The design is a balance between the regular shapes of antiquity and a “barbaric” finish, some sort of path that leads us back to the Dark Ages, when gradually but steadily the canons of beauty were forgotten or reinvented. Dark ages, however, are also a good opportunity for a crossbreeding of cultures and styles, and a platform for the discovery of common roots.
Thanks to Parco Regionale della Vena del Gesso Romagnola, Saint-Gobain PPC Italia and Apuana Corporate.
About
Davide-Giulio Aquini
As a reaction to my “two-dimensional” education (graphics and drawings) I feel a deep attraction for “real” materials. By “real” I mean “honest”, the ones which show their nature without imitating other materials or hiding their flaws.
I was born in Venice in 1982, where I studied graphic design. I started working with advertising agencies and web since 2001. In 2007 I decided to start my own business as a freelancer and I started studying again, attending product and interaction design courses in Milan and Padua. I approached product design through competitions, some won with products currently on sale. Now I work in the furniture design and lighting fields, both working with companies and self-producing my projects. I am a teacher and coordinator of the course in PTP Graphic Design at IED Venice.
