Designer

Sagarminaga Atelier is a design studio and artisan production workshop specialized in the setting of spaces and in the design and production of tailor-made pieces based on vegetable fibers.

Sagarminaga Atelier was born in 2017, we weave the narrative of spaces using natural fibers.
As a design studio specializing in installationswe work with premium natural materials like esparto grass. We elevate and reinvent their traditional image through bespoke designs, meticulously handcrafted with digital techniques and guided by a commitment to sustainability. We reinterpret traditional raw materials like esparto grass and rattan, infusing them with sophistication in our designs, whether for hotel installations, or furniture. At Atelier Sagarminaga, we use only the finest natural fibers, sourced from easily renewable plants, which are biodegradable and of the highest quality. Additionally, we work with select fine woods and can incorporate other materials, such as metal and textiles, to tailor each project to your specific needs.

Atelier Sagarminaga works with architects, interior designers, and private clients, all of whom collaborate closely with our studio throughout their projects. Our multidisciplinary team meticulously analyzes each proposal for installations and design pieces, exploring the full potential of natural materials. Depending on the unique requirements of each project, we craft the fiber by hand, applying color dyes or employing various techniques such as weaving, molding, or sewing. Our production process transcends traditional methods, incorporating our own innovative development techniques.

Gabriela de Sagarminaga
Gabriela studied Fashion Design Styling and completed a Master’s in Marketing Management. After working with Custo Barcelona and Flaqué Internacional, she embarked on a six-month journey through Latin America, interviewing artisans and social entrepreneurs, which deeply influenced her creative approach.
Upon returning to Spain, she developed a research project on the connection  between craft techniques and territory, leading to a residency at Medialab Prado in  Madrid. There, she discovered esparto grass and its historical significance, inspiring her  to establish Sagarminaga Atelier in Bilbao. Her work merges craftsmanship, innovation,  and sustainability, drawing from her background in fashion, design, and social innova tion to create pieces that go beyond decoration—they tell stories, evoke emotions, and  shape immersive environments.
