Project by Giorgio Majno and Oddina Pittatore

This project was born from the love that I share with my wife Oddina, for ancient trees, witnesses of time and history, living beings that have been able to weave a deep relationship of harmony with the environment of which they are part. We traveled through most of Italy in search of these patriarchs, fascinated by their specific characteristics: exceptional size, unique shapes, resilience, historical relevance. But also attracted by their dynamic balance, in continuous change, evolution and transformation. In particular then, by their strength, the resistance they express and the concept of "Stabilitas loci". This principle, which means "living firmly in a place", one of the cornerstones of Western monasticism introduced by the Rule of St. Benedict in the 6th century, emphasizes the ability to create specific links with the environment in which one lives, even for centuries in the case of the Patriarchs, the great secular trees. By intelligently adapting to the seasonal rhythm of time, climate change, and geographic uniqueness, trees have developed a specific intelligence that is very different from our own. They are sophisticated, complex and advanced organisms, whose possibilities and capabilities are still little known, to which we approached with respect, in silence, listening to them and then portraying their symbolic and evocative power.

Stabilitas Loci is a photographic research on the secular trees of Italy.

It is a personal vision on some of these living beings, it is not meant to be an exhaustive documentation. I chose to shoot in color, digital and small format, to be more open, elastic and light, free from cumbersome equipment and techniques. I wanted to be able to experiment without the hassle of technique.

The work is presented in single photos, diptychs, triptychs, and polyptychs, to communicate with greater intensity the height, breadth, and three-dimensionality of these living sculptures. Each individual tree is a unique portrait. Studio Giorgio Majno in Via Cappuccio 5, presents a photographic exhibition entitled "Stabilitas Loci", secular trees of Italy. This project was born from the love shared by Giorgio Majno and his wife Oddina Pittatore for secular trees, witnesses of time and history, living beings that have been able to weave a deep relationship of harmony with the environment of which they are part. But also attracted by their dynamic balance, in continuous change, evolution and transformation.
