Nicolette de Waart is a Dutch designer and artist. Her work is shaped around connection, Femininity, and
Beauty. She has built a cohesive body of work across multiple disciplines, from furniture and lighting to
sculptures and functional art objects. She considers her work continuous between craftsmanship excellence,
traditional techniques, and materials such as Bronze, Wood, textiles, clay, and 'cire-perdue'; a lost wax method.
Her work was featured at exhibitions at Venice Design Biennial, Saatchi Gallery in London, and most recently at
Milan Design Week, Italy and Brussels in Belgium.
Her design vocabulary is deeply rooted in nature and her fascination and curiosity with different cultures and
countries she lived in. She creates objects of bold simplicity, and elegance, often with a tacit playfulness, in a
continuous search for the novel and undiscovered. Several of her best creations came as a consequence of a
voyage of exploration and experimentation, followed by solid partnerships with local artisans like the foundry
she works with and their extensive expertise. Although her techniques are rooted in tradition, her work strives
for innovation and production within the circulatory system.
Nicolette: “More than twenty years ago, I started my design career. After living in Singapore and London for
over a decade and traveling extensively, I set up base again in the Netherlands, running my own studio.I am
proud to have received multiple awards for my organic shaped Leaf Seats and Poppy Bloom Stools. My designs
are engineered to the needs of modern living; an ever-changing environment of the way we live and work.
“I want to create unique designs that are beautiful, functional and long-lasting.”
Returning to the Netherlands reignited my passion for sculpture and ceramics. In Singapore, I honed my skills
under the guidance of a professional ceramist, mastering practical and sculptural techniques. Back in
Amsterdam, I retrained in sculpture, exploring diverse methods to create intricate heads, hands, and small
sculptures, before embracing my freestyle expression.
I am proud to share that my sculptures were selected for the prestigious Venice Design Biennial 2023, at the
SAATCHI Gallery in London, and CURATED by Lionel Jadot in Brussels.”
