To make the world habitable

Art+Design

5vie event

physical event

In an atmospheric space, hidden in the courtyards of the historic 5 Vie district, Karimoku New Standard presented its the new pieces ‘Colour Wood Chair’ by Scholten & Baijings, coat stand ‘Angle’ by Lucien Gumy and an XL version of dining table ‘Scout’ by Christian Haas.

On the occasion of this exhibition, Karimoku New Standard’s creative director David Glaettli invited Italy-based Korean artist Chung Eun-Mo to create an extensive installation that brings the furniture into a dialog with her intriguing paintings.

Born in Seoul, Korea, Chung graduated in 1980 MFA from Graduate School of Art and Architecture - Pratt Institute, New York. She lives and works in Italy since 1987, currently in Torre Orsina, Umbria.

Art critic Angel Gonzalez wrote about her work: “In some way, the canvases of Eun Mo, that immediately evoke habitable constructions, have, at the same time, something of those more humble constructions that constitute furniture. Therefore, in the same way that Erik Satie dreamt a ‘musique d’ameublement’, perhaps Eun Mo has uncovered an unexpected and intriguing ‘musique d’ameublement’. Although there is a point of humour in both cases, above all there exists the solemn proclamation that art has as an inescapable, most urgent and imperative task: To make the world habitable.”"In the text about Eun Mo’s work, art critic Angel Gonzales ends with the beautiful conclusion that in her paintings he recognizes the strive to make the world habitable (which he argues might be an important task of art in general). When I first looked at the elaborate compositions of forms and colors in Eun Mo’s work and red Angel Gonzales quotation, I realized that in a more profane way, fundamentally to build furniture has that same purpose." said David Glaettli, creative director Karimoku New Standard.

In the beginning of furniture, there is the very human wish to make our surrounding habitable, adjust it to our needs, make it familiar, make it our own. Furniture are tools to make our homes habitable. Put a chair in an empty space and it becomes a room - add a table and a bed and it become a house. Eun Mo does the same with her canvases - although the geometries in her compositions might appear rigorous, they are ultimately architectural and convey human proportions." continues David Glaettli "For this exhibition, I invited Eun Mo to juxtapose her works with Karimoku New Standard pieces. To me Karimoku New Standard furniture has the aspiration to penetrate the common and re-think objects, starting at it’s origins : “Standard” not as in normal, common, but as in exemplary, directive. I felt that confronting our furniture with Eun Mo’s work could convey this concept in an unexpected and intuitive way. I hope it can give an inspiring and joyful approach to furniture and furniture design within the breathless turmoil of the Salone del Mobile."
